Peruvian Superfoods: A Wonder of Nature

Peruvian Superfoods: A Wonder of Nature

Peru is a country with incredible biodiversity. Its different climates and altitudes create fertile lands for a wide variety of products, ranging from the millennial potato - which once saved Europe from famine - to the most exotic Amazonian fruits. As if that weren't enough, in the midst of this range of biodiversity, the so-called superfoods are gaining more and more prominence.

The world market demands them for being a great source of fiber, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. In addition, they have compounds and antioxidants that promote heart health and provide amazing benefits. In the following list we explain the properties of 10 of the best Peruvian superfoods:

Cacao is a tree from America that produces a fruit of the same name that can be used as an ingredient in foods, among which chocolate stands out.

Cacao (not cocoa) has a high level of fat (especially saturated, and to a lesser extent, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated), carbohydrates and proteins, but it also contains magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, theobromine, caffeine, antioxidants, and more!

Cacao also stands out for having a high energy intake, which is why it is usually indicated for those who carry out sports activities or intensive physical exercise.

Now, if we talk about quality, it is important to note that in Peru 3 types of cacao are grown: Forastero, Trinitario and Criollo.

Although all three varieties are wonderful, the Criollo Cacao is the best of the bunch. And why is that? Well, Criollo has a more delicate and complex flavor, it has a higher concentration of properties such as dopamine, phenylethylamine (PEA) and serotonin, the ideal combo to boost the mood naturally and promote energy.

This Andean root has been used since ancient times to improve physical and mental abilities. It is a great energizer that is also credited with beneficial properties for the nervous system and memory. It has a high concentration of proteins and nutrients.

Its root, which can be of different colors, is dried and consumed in powder form, especially those with yellow, red and black roots, although it is also used in the form of capsules and liquid extract. In addition to being used in the kitchen, it is attributed to medicinal properties for the treatment of many ailments.

Actually, “Natives of Peru living in the Andean highlands, traditionally supplement their daily meals with Maca in a variety of consumable dish forms, in the belief that it favorably affects energy, mood, fertility, improves sexual desire and decreases anxiety”. (Source)

Maca is a well-know adaptogen recognized as the “Incan Fountain of Youth”, since it contains excellent source of over 20 amino acids, including 8 essential amino acids and phytonutrients that increase energy and stamina in the face of demanding work, illness; or any other stressor.

Originally from the Peruvian Amazon, Camu Camu is the fruit with the highest vitamin C content in the world, 60 times more content than the orange.

In size, this fruit is similar to grapes, with colors that can be red, green or a combination of both.

According to research, it is an excellent source of minerals, such as sodium, potassium, calcium, zinc, magnesium, manganese, and copper.

Camu Camu also contains amino acids, fatty acids and many polyphenols including flavonoids. In short, this Peruvian superfood is like a hug for the immune system. It boosts energy, helps in the synthesis of collagen (so camu camu powder helps hair and skin) and it can aid in weight loss too. Camu Camu is a wonderful addition to anyone’s daily diet.

Lucuma or lucumo, also called "Inca gold", is the fruit of Pouteria lucuma, the most widespread and appreciated species of the genus Pouteria, and stands out for being an excellent natural sweetener. Originally from the Andean valleys of Peru, it is used above all to make sweets, desserts and ice cream.

However, since this Amazonian fruit is considered a superfood, its pulp is sold dry all over the world, also promoting digestive well-being and containing large amounts of antioxidants. With a shape similar to that of avocado, hard green skin, and fleshy and sweet pulp with a yellowish hue, it has a flavor reminiscent of caramel.

Lucuma improves our health due to its many beneficial properties for our body, starting with its high content of nutrients, fiber and antioxidants, including beta-carotenes. These are precursors of vitamin A, essential for cellular health, and responsible for stimulating the repair of cell damage and the growth of new cells, including those of the skin.

It also provides vitamin B3, vital for muscle development and highly recommended for people whose diet is not abundant with meat, and a not inconsiderable amount of minerals. For example, its high percentage of potassium helps cardiovascular health.

Ginger, also known only in Peru as kion, is the rhizome (underground stem) of a plant, which is characterized by having a particular flavor. It is highly sought in the food industry for giving a spicy flavor to the most diverse dishes.

Besides culinary use, the plant is one of the most widespread natural remedies in the world and with more properties and medicinal applications for different pathologies.

Ginger is one of the most relevant and used species in traditional medicine, by virtue of certain chemical constituents such as gingerol and shogaol, which give it antioxidants, anti-inflammatory, antiemetic and anticancer properties, among others.

A superfood is understood to be those edibles that have properties above the average, providing a greater amount of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other nutrients that the body requires to function properly.

In this case, chia seeds are packed with protein, fiber, and omega 3 fatty acids. But that’s not all! They’re also an excellent source of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), zinc, and more!  The nutrients are just incredible.

These characteristics are what allow us to determine how powerful chia seeds are, since unlike others, one of their most notable benefits is that they help burn fat more quickly, and this is due to their high fiber content, which stimulates and prolongs the feeling of satiety.
