Hormonal balance is something we all strive for! And unfortunately, hormones are VERY testy. They can be tough to balance, and so many are at play at once!

So let’s get into it! Of course, you’ll see some Peruvian superfoods pop up, but there are others too. :)
Superfoods that support hormonal balance
Flaxseeds can be great for hormone production. The reason why is that they are a great source of something called phytoestrogens. It contains a specific kind called lignans which have an oestrogenic and antiestrogenic impact.
We should also note that it is a great source of fiber, antioxidants, and omega 3s. All of which support healthy blood sugar levels, which also support hormones.
2. Chia seeds
They really are the perfect food. Again- for balancing blood sugar which is so good for hormones! Another reason to think about blood sugar when your hormones are off is that you are likely experiencing low energy. Balanced blood sugar helps sustain your energy levels! Like flax seeds, chia seeds contain antioxidants, fiber, and omega 3s!
Turmeric is the primary spice found in many Indian curries. It is a root that comes from the species of plant Curcurum Longa. The dried root is ground into a distinctive yellow powder, which gives most curry dishes their distinguishing color. The chemical compounds of turmeric are known as curcuminoids, with the active substance known as curcumin.
Turmeric is well known for healing and therapeutic benefits. Where it helps with hormones is that it has an impact on hormone regulation via supporting the liver in metabolising estrogen. It also helps women manage symptoms of menopause and helps with period cramps.
Nuts in general are great for helping to balance blood sugar. They can also influence our endocrine system. The endocrine system helps regulate major glands that deal with hormones: Pituitary gland, pancreas, ovaries, thyroid, etc. If you are working on weight loss, just be mindful of the amount as the caloric intake can add up quickly. Almonds can also increase the body’s adiponectin hormone-- responsible for regulating blood sugar. All in all, a handful a day is a great thing for hormones!
Let’s say your body is producing too much oestrogen. Pomegranates can help restore its balance. Why this? Because pomegranates contain this natural agent that can inhibit enzymes that we see in women’s bodies that convert estrogen into estradiol. The lignans in the pomegranate seeds are also beneficial.
Cacao is rooted in so much ancient wisdom. Cacao is great for women’s period and female hormones.
Cacao itself is full of magnesium which can help reduce cramping as well as pesky PMS symptoms. Cacao is also LOADED with antioxidants. This is great for reducing inflammation and supporting fertility.
Cacao is also full of fiber so it can help with balancing blood sugar, which, we know, keeping your blood sugar balanced is a very hormone-friendly thing to do! It’s also such a great mood booster- those with hormone issues can always utilize that.
7. Green Tea
Green tea is a great way to start the day. It is full of antioxidants and this can help reduce inflammation which also supports healthy fertility. There are studies that also suggest that the catechins in green tea may reduce the build-up of pain-causing prostaglandins. Green tea is perfect to drink year round, but also during your period!
Green tea has also been shown to increase fertile cervical music and this can keep things healthy within the vagina. Consider green tea a true hormone friendly tonic!
8. Olive Oil
This is one of the most nutrient dense oils you can use in your cooking and baking.
The reason olive oil is great for hormones is that it is a monounsaturated fat and this helps to create more healthy and responsive cell membranes. This is important because it allows for hormones more accessibility to adhere to the cell membrane.
We want healthy hormone communication. Getting in healthy fats helps tremendously!
Let’s keep it going with the healthy fats. Avocados are great for hormones because not only are they an extremely healthy fat, they are loaded with something called beta-sitosterol. This can have a positive effect on blood cholesterol levels and help balance cortisol-- aka the stress hormone.
The sterols in avocados can also influence estrogen and progesterone. These are two hormones that are responsible for regulating menstrual cycles.
There was a study that found that the combination of fat and fiber in avocados increased hormones that promote satiety. It can help you stay full for hours, which is nice for hunger hormones.
Okay, so, confession… We saved the best for last.
Our organic, gelatinized Peruvian maca powder is our prized possession. Maca is considered one of the healthiest foods on the planet. It is similar in appearance to the common potato and is a cruciferous vegetable with adaptogenic properties- meaning it helps the body adapt to and deal with stress.
One of the main reasons people are drawn to Maca is that it may help support hormones. A 2005 study showed that 42% of post menopausal women supplementing with maca experienced a decrease in menopause symptoms (which is huge!)- This included bringing up low mood and bringing up energy levels. Many women with hormonal issues battle low mood and low energy and maca is shown to really help. More research is needed but multiple studies are popping up around Maca and hormones.
Another study was done on rats (both male and female) to figure out just how much of a physiological effect Maca can have on certain bodily processes. They wanted to determine if it was worthy of further studies. Their conclusion was heavily pointing toward: Study more people! There is something here! Particularly they noted that after 90 days they saw mood increase, cortisol stable out and a lowering of the blood pressure.
Women report it is so easy to take their Maca daily as it goes into so many different things. It is great as a latte, in coffee, in tea, in smoothies. Some people even bake with it! Typically one teaspoon a day is enough to make a difference.
